I met Douglas Gordon one day of 2009. He is my neighbor and now he is one of my best friends. One day he invited me at his studio. It was magic. The time stopped. I didn’t know where to look. I felt like Alice in Wonderland. This is Douglas Gordon’s life. This is his studio.
Since the Renaissance, the artist’s studio has been a space shrouded in a special aura—or rather, a sense of magic. It is a space that is often strictly cordoned off, where ideas are conceived and developed before being exhibited in public spaces as finished works of art. Douglas Gordon, who has been one of the stars of contemporary art for decades now, works with photography, video, and installations, demonstrating in his work, among other things, a particular sensitivity to redefining the concept of documentation and the document, as well as to the reuse of found footage. Undoubtedly, then, the intrusion of photographer and friend of the artist Pigi Psimenou’s into his studio in Berlin is a gesture of multifaceted interest that goes beyond the (indiscriminate) curiosity that the studio of a famous artist inevitably provokes. In Psimenou’s photographs, we see some of his famous works (Blind Stars) or fragments of references to them (frames from his film about Zidane); all of these, hang on walls covered with aluminum survival blankets. Perhaps the most striking feature, however, is the hundreds of densely arranged wine glasses engraved with quotations from James Joyce’s Ulysses, which he often gives as gifts to friends and fellow diners. The photographs are fascinating primarily because they document a cross-section between the private nature of the artist’s life and the conception of the work, and its public nature as an object of exhibition. From this perspective, the fact that the project’s exhibition framework is defined by the survival-rescue blanket may be a particularly eloquent gesture.
Lo Studio di Douglas Gordon
Fin dal Rinascimento, lo studio dell’artista è stato uno spazio avvolto da un’aura speciale — o meglio, da un senso di magia. È uno spazio che viene spesso rigorosamente isolato, dove le idee vengono concepite e sviluppate prima di essere esposte negli spazi pubblici come opere d’arte compiute. Douglas Gordon, che da decenni è una delle stelle dell’arte contemporanea, lavora con la fotografia, il video e le installazioni, dimostrando nel suo lavoro, tra le altre cose, una particolare sensibilità nel ridefinire il concetto di documentazione e di documento, oltre che nel riutilizzo di filmati d’archivio (found footage). Senza dubbio, quindi, l’intrusione nel suo studio di Berlino da parte della fotografa e amica dell’artista, Pigi Psimenou, è un gesto di multiforme interesse che va oltre la (indiscriminata) curiosità che lo studio di un artista famoso inevitabilmente provoca. Nelle fotografie di Psimenou vediamo alcune delle sue opere famose (Blind Stars) o frammenti di riferimenti a esse (fotogrammi del suo film su Zidane); tutti questi elementi sono appesi a pareti coperte da coperte isotermiche in alluminio. Forse la caratteristica più sorprendente, tuttavia, è rappresentata dalle centinaia di bicchieri da vino, disposti fittamente, incisi con citazioni dall’Ulisse di James Joyce, che l’artista regala spesso ad amici e commensali. Le fotografie sono affascinanti soprattutto perché documentano uno spaccato tra la natura privata della vita dell’artista e l’ideazione dell’opera, e la sua natura pubblica come oggetto da esposizione. Da questa prospettiva, il fatto che la cornice espositiva del progetto sia definita dalla coperta di sopravvivenza/salvataggio può essere un gesto particolarmente eloquente.
